Thanks for the warm welcome. Were to start.......... I started riding on a Mini Trail 50 at 7 years old, and basically had a bike of some sort or another under my legs up until about as long as this bike has been parked.
I just picked this 1978 bike up from a neighbor at our recreation property. He retired it when he picked up his Harley in '03. She has sat in a garage and hasn't been rode since.

When it was parked it had a few problems. A leaky head gasket, and the Old "pops out of first gear", so these will be high on the work list. Besides new timing belts, carb rebuild, gas tank cleaning, and any other items that would need checking/rebuilding after all these years.

Now for the good, COST: 500 Frostys - Just under 50,000 miles. The heads were rebuilt and have about 2000 miles on them (so new valves seals will be done. The tires only have maybe 200 miles on them (still have nubs showing), the bike is pretty clean with no major showing of oil leakage.
The paint is nice, just not my cup of tea in Purple and a pinkish/plum accent,so that will be getting changed in time. It is sporting a Vetter and Tourpack, which will remain on it as I'll be driving it to and from work (mainly expressway) This bike reminds me in size and shape of my Old Suzuki "Water Buffalo" but I'm sure it won't turn the R's of the 2 stroker.... LOL

So now to a few questions: Is there a good vendor out there that you guys recommend for parts that will be needed (full gasket set, carb kits, etc) It looks like Randakk's has about everything that I would need.

And I have searched for a few days and not found a good thread on the popping out of first gear. I know it should be one of 2 things.. the shifter racheting unit under the front cover or internally with the shift forks.

What would I be looking for the wear under the front cover? Also, other then the factory service manual any good threads on rebuilding the trans. I know alot of guys would shy away from splitting the trans, I feel my ability is within the realm of that. If not,I will try and document the process and post it.
Thanks in Advance, Dan

Definitely looking like a project. But the good news is that it appears to be all there.

You should expect to replace those tires. Yep, they look good but they're about 5 years over useful life.

It's says it also for chrome, but there are threads that claim it will scratch chrome, but it works awesome on alumium, I bought it a Advance Auto a little pricey but I think it's worth it, $14,99

The tires will get replaced once I get her on the road, there are no checks, but they feel hard and last thing I want is a blowout at highway speeds, Thanks for the reminder and heads up.

ah, come on, I had 16 years on the tires before they developed a crack all the way around 200 miles from home..

as for parts. There are several vendors out there. I have gotten brake and water pump gasket sets from partsnmore. Stay away (IMHO) sabre cycle or barracuda cycle, unless you want to be fish bait

Probably not. You are still using stock cams and valves right? There is some very minor porting that can work with stock parts. But unless you port heads a lot you are better off not touching them. Easier to screw them up than it is to help them.

Spent most of Saturday cleaning and polishing (mainly the front rim that looked like some Gorilla changed a tire on). Also decided I'm going to get her started and check the condition on a few things, carbs and want to get a first hand feel for the kicking out of first gear. Figure if I'm going to do the top end,I should do it with the engine out at the same time if I have to split the trans.

So today I learned a lesson I wasn't expecting. Drove to town to Wallyworld to pick up a battery, Grabbed the only one they had on the shelf and headed back home, walked into the garage and opened it to only find a used one from 2001 in the box. Talk about smokin hot. Got on the phone with the manager expecting some hassle, but to my surprize,he was very sorry, called the next nearest store to confirm they had one and said it woud be waiting for me and they wanted to cover my time and effort. So when I got there at the service desk, it was ready and they also gave me a $25.00 gift card....... Wow I guess when I took the manager right off the bat that I was very ticked, and it was costing me work time on a nice day, he understood my feelings.
When I tried to crank it,she was dragging slow, a quick check of the cables showed the problem, the connection at the starter was rusted bad from water getting under the rubber boot over the years and of course the nut was so rusted it didn't want to loosen without tweaking the stud. So I had to drop the exhaust and shifter to remove the starter and cut the cable, grind the lug down to get a good bite of the inner locking nut, then quick heat the nut to get it off without breaking the stud. But at least the starter was saved. Also gave me a good reason to give the exhaust a full cleaning and polishing. So monday after work, I hope I can hear it breath for the first time. (It would be my birthday present to myself)

She's getting real naked,Decide to pull the motor completely out and do everything on the bench. If it needs it,will probably split the cases to fix the Jumping out of gear problem. My Timing Belts and parts to repair the shifting cam if needed came today.
