Sulfur Yellow Vesco Rabid Transit Tourer

#1

Post by markwelna »

Going against the "mission" of this forum i have decided to turn my stock naked original 76 into a long distance touring machine. I enjoy touring on vintage machines. Getting them ready for 3000+ miles. Talking with people about them at every stop. Eyeing them up from the campsite, bars, and restaurants. Everything about it.

But I enjoy camping as well, and i'm getting older. My back and neck aren't as forgiving as they used to be. Our daily range seems to be limited by my girlfriends ability to remain on the saddle. These issues are compounded by the fact that my primary touring friend rides a GL1800 and often likes to make miles.

These factors necessitate that my naked wing make the transformation to a long distance tourer. During this process i have taken every effort to keep the bike as original as possible and when replacement of a stock piece was required i am keeping the part so that i am able to return the bike to it's original condition.

I started with the Hondaline set up. This is required for camping gear and clothing for two up touring.

I have moved on to the installation of a Don Vesco Rabid Transit fairing. This fairing is known for actually increasing performance and fuel economy unlike some of it's competitors. I like the look and i need some protection to make miles day after day rain or shine. I think it makes the wing look like a vintage sportbike of sorts.

Here are some pictures of the work in progress.

I had to make some cuts to the fairing lowers to get them to clear the valve covers.

The stock handlebars which are on in the photos need to go because of clearance issues. Taking them off was not nearly as easy as i anticipated. I have a pair of "low rise" bars on the way from crescent moon cycles. I think they are in effect superbike bars. I hope that they are low enough to get me where i need to be. I have read that steering lock needs to be reduced some regardless of the bars. I hope this does not cause a problems in parking lots. I plan to use the solution of a SOHC member in what seems like a "clean" way to do this. A hole is drilled through the stop, threads are cut, and a small bolt installed so that the steering stop can be adjusted.

Once the bars arrive if it seems like their bend is suitable for this application it will be on to drilling them for internal wiring.

Then i'll finally be able to get behind this fairing on the road and see what kind or a hole it punches in the wind!

I like the look of that from the side. What does the front look like! Are you from Saint Paul MN? I may be passing through on my 75 in July.

Thanks! Saint Paul, MN. Stop on by. I'm 2 minutes off of HWY 94 near downtown Saint Paul. The fairing definately looks better from the side and back. This is the forward most photo i have right now.

A bucket style seat like the travelcade might make the time in the saddle longer. The original bench seat looks neater but it gets old after a couple of hours.

Yeah......i'm on the lookout for a used aftermarket seat. hopefully a corbin someday. for the time being a thick sheepskin cover will have to do. the backrest helps my girlfriend feel more comfortable with moving around and gives her some options with seating positions.

Sharp looking ride, definitely go with the aftermarket seat, its a bolt on so its no trouble putting the original back on. Tell your 1800 riding buddy he needs to slow down and smell the roses, take roads less traveled and stop and take a picture once in a while. But in order to keep up with him look to see what he has done to his bike to extend his range by increasing his comfort level and see if you can emulate it in some way, otherwise he will always have an unfair advantage.

Ha. :-D Thanks for the positive comments guys. My riding buddy actually does smell the roses once in awhile. He actually adapts very well to different riding styles and likes to explore the back roads as well. He has done the MN 2010 Rally though which was 2010 miles in two days. Yikes! It's just that the GL1800 gobbles up miles so effortlessly. It's less like riding a motorcycle and more like flying a spaceship at an altitude of about 2 feet. A marvelous piece of engineering.

Does anyone have any experience with superbike type bars and touring / long distance riding? I'm a little concerned that i'll be leaning too far over for the footpeg postion on my bike.

The superbike bars will work well with the pegs. The seat may be a different story. I have superbike bars on mine but the seat is a bit lower than stock. Your height may make a difference too. I am 6' with longs arms a legs. My bike fits me pretty well.

So far so good with the superbike bars. The riding position seems great though i haven't put on many miles with them yet. It sure was a pain in the butt drilling them for internal wiring and re-routing cables! The bars don't make it any easier pushing the bike around in the garage either.

I haven't been able to test out the fairing much yet. I'm leaving it off while i work on and prep the bike for a trip at the end of the month. If it doesn't cool down soon i'm not sure i'll want to have it on for the trip.

Thats a good looking wing. You have to make them what you want them to be.

I ran my wiring outside. I'm too lazy to drill and pull wires.

Thanks!

The front rim is back from the shop after a truing and a new bridgestone spitfire. I finally got to try out the fairing on a 50 mile run down the mississippi yesterday evening.

The Vesco provides a LOT of protection and is virtually rattle free. It sure does keep a lot of heat down by my feet. I'll appreciate that in the fall. The loss of steering travel is annoying but i think i'll get used to it. I'm leaving for a 2 week 3000 mile trip on Friday, my first with the GL. I wish i had some more shake down time......

if you think of it as 200 miles a day for 14 consecutive days it doesn't seem so daunting.
