not sure yet what to call this one. may very well depend on the final colour, and I may not even stick with blue (like that could happen). Not even sure if it is a diamond in the rough, or a bucket of bolts yet

will post all the pics here http://s199.photobucket.com/albums/aa88 ... 07/79wing/ and here http://www.ngwclub.com/gallery/v/wingma ... 07/79wing/

picked it up in a yard. missing battery sidecover. HONDA on front fork emblem, headlight ears and case... has all the vetter stuff which I am planing on removing. Plan is to strip to bare frame, and restart from there

Image

odd thing is the headers, clearly not OEM, both pipes go back and then both go into the muffler, hopefully clear in this pic

Image

but alas, it is over 90 degrees out, and VERY humid. tomorrow AM start stripping (I will feel at one with Frank, but without the sawzall

well they may say "dead men tell no tales" but autopsies are revealing

you gotta wonder, who owned it, where has it traveled, what stories could be told

well, fuzzy picture, but "Freedom Honda, Hamden Conn" (notice the now collectors edition BLUE NGW hat)

Image

and some PO knew to cut a slot in the tabs for the seat so you could simply loosen the rear two bolts and slide the seat out and not have to take them all the way loose

looks pretty clean as I have removed stuff, and the vinyl on the faux tank cover is good, last tag was '07 so I bet it was kept inside until then

interesting things you find. the air cleaner holder is missing the top, and is not bolted to the carbs, also missing a cotter pin on one of the carb throttle links. The coils have marker paint on them saying "1979 GL1000" clearly from ebay. So at some point, the bike wasn't working, the coils changed, and maybe even the carbs messed with

as my son and I pulled out the radiator, a key for the vetter stuff fell out. Dang, I can hear stuff rattleing in the bags and sure I got lucky. but alas, it opened the fairing sidecover which was already off, but not the bags or the box

take a look at these mounted to the handlebars....

Image

Image

splines look good on the rear wheel (and search as I might could not find the manufacture date on the tire (not that I would keep the tire))

Image

right about here I hit my finger trying to pursade a bolt loose.... time to take a break

Image

notice the good looking HD in the background

The other day I found where the original owner of my yellow kept his spare key. Too bad all the locks are changed now.

THAT is for sure! :-D

Roger, you may want to move that HD to another building. It is going to get jealous that the Wing is getting all of your wrenching attention. lolol

well, good news.... the rea end oil was brand spanking new and clean

sort of okay news.... the engine oil, dark, but no water or milk products

not good news.... pulled the carbs and the two left intakes had water sitting in them, the valve stems have rust, and don't know yet whether water is into the cylinder area

dirt... lots of dirt.... a lot of stuff is really clean so it was well maintained until it sat out in the weather

got the water out of the spark plug places and the intakes.... poured in MMO to both (removed the plugs)...

turned it over.... knda tight the first turn and then really easy

HEY GOOD NEWS.... the belts look good.... they will be on ebay soon! (also the water pump is not bakelight, and no wobble)
