Next bike project

This bike has been sitting in the barn for a little over year. Its the same year & model of the first bike I had. Plan to do a complete stock restoration.

Here she is just after unloading it. Brought it up from North Carolina. Its a 1971 Honda CB175 K5. My original one was Candy Rudy Red. Deb saids I got too many red bikes, so it might stay blue.


Started tearing it down.


Parts & Pieces


I did fire the engine before dismantling the bike. Ran "okay"


Gathered the parts to be bead blasted & powder coated. Only piece missing is the seat pan.


Forks were leaking badly. One was full of water.


Been collecting parts for a while. I like to have a separate place for them. Makes it easier for me to remember where they are...


Hope to have it ready for next spring.

It's hard to believe we thought a "175" was a motorcycle.

Looks like a fun project. I admire your organization. If I can keep everything in the same room I am happy.

You are starting with a very nice bike. Can you save the paint on the tank and side panels? Sure looks like a nice one.

The 175 was the bike i wanted back when I was young. Ended up buying a 305 scrambler instead and loved it.

I started on a 175 but it was a 2 stroke, Villiers, in a '58 Ambassador frame. taught me a lot about bikes, especially how to fall off.

This is more than a bike project to me. The original one I bought new in 1971. Had just turned 16. Picked up another paper route and worked at two gas stations part time. Those were the days

Fred, the tank is in bad shape (fuel left in it - numerous holes on the bottom). I have NOS side covers and ears. The fork tubes are in really good shape. Turns out the leaking seals kinda rust proofed em. I've got a line on another tank, but it will need some work. Still trying to find a very good or NOS headlight case.

As I'm finding out; CB175's are popular for restorations and cafe bikes. Unfortunately; this makes parts harder to find.

Things took a different twist today. I got an oven a while back from one members of the VW club.

I like to cure parts after they're painted. My little toaster oven can only handle so much. Plans are to paint the engine cases & covers, so the oven will come in handy.

Comparison between an NOS kick stand and the off the bike. The original was bent, cracked and someone welded an appendage on it. I already straightened it on the press and ground down the crack before welding. The little do-dad thingy will be removed too.


120 grit flapper wheel is great to remove scratches & gouges.


Lower front edge of frame after sanding and one coat of paint. The paint gives me an idea of what it'll look like after powder coating. Still need to finish sanding with 320 grit.


Exhaust cleaned up nice, but the left one has some minor scratches. Need to do some research on how to remove them (if possible).
Parts continue to come in.

My powder coater has the parts sandblasted and primed. Most do as its essential to a good job. Talk to the person that your having do the powder coat and see if he does sandblasting as well. Might save you a lot of work sanding the frame down.

Hi Dean. The powder coater I use does blasting, but I prefer to do it myself. I take the parts to a business which rents their industrial booths ($17.50/hr). Imagine a 1" hose, 125psi and their special recipe coming out of a 1/2" nozzle The sanding & painting is just to make sure the surfaces will be good after powder coating (OCD thing...)

More updates

Took the clutch cover off. The 175 has two oil filters. There's a screen on the suction side of the pump and it got this weird centrifugal type filter hanging off the crank.




Clutch looks pretty good. Just need to clean up the parts and measure for specs.

More engine work

The manual calls for pulling the oil filter cap off by pulling on the tabs with pliers. Wouldn't budge. Got some help and found it takes an 8mm bolt.


No metal particles, but some sludge. These filters were usually neglected.


The pump and clutch basket come out as a unit, but first the filter and one drive gear has to be removed




Oil pump is held in with two bolts and the basket has a circlip. Once removed; the pump & basket slide off.




Cases split


One windage tray out, the other still in.
