Sorry for the delay, super busy work weekend. Here she is after getting new belts, thermostat, hoses, an oil change, fixed the neutral safety switch and swapped the floorboards for pegs. Feels like a whole new bike. :-D

Have a new hiccup. Looked out this morning to see this. Acting like a Harley, leaving oil all over. J/k
Pic 2 shows the area we worked on the other day. Dry as a bone there.
Pic 3 is a shot from above at the rear of the engine. The blue gasket sealer appears to be the culprit.
Pic 4 is a shot of underneath showing where I think it's mostly coming from.
So my new question is, how much trouble is it going to be to reseal the rear cover?

:IDTS: :IDTS: I hate seeing RTV on engines where it doesn't belong. Had to tilt my head to see the pics. Looks like the clutch cover. You can remove that with the engine in place. Easiest to remove the rear wheel for more room. Then put in a new gasket. If it is the rear engine cover then the engine has to come out for that. That is a lot of oil though. So you have a pretty bad leak that needs repaired correctly.

Can anyone elaborate on the process of adapting a seat from either a 1000 or a 1200 to his 1100. Even if it is only temporary, the current seat id in rough shape.

Well, as expected there was no gasket on the clutch cover just RTV. Put a gasket in and resealed it only to find it still leaking today. Tried to reseal it again this time taking a few extra precautions. Hope it holds.

Ok, the cover is still leaking from the same spot. There are two studs on the right hand side and it leaks from the lower stud. When I had the cover off I even used carb cleaner and compressed air to clean the surface of residual oil. I then gobbed RTV onto the gasket and sealed it up. Didn't start the bike until the next day or anything. Still have a slow steady drip. Ideas anyone?

Wandering if the cover is the same one used on the 1000. You may have a damaged/warped cover. I have spares from the 1000 if it is the same. May have to pull yours back off again and size it up next to one I have. Also need to verify you are using the correct length bolts.

Apparently the leak persists after another attempt to repair it today. I'm wandering if the clutch cover is warped or maybe we are missing something. I noticed today that the two studs were different lengths and proceeded to thread the longer of the two further into the case until they were even. Checked to see if the cover appeared to mate evenly to the case. Installed the cover and tightened the bolts in a cross pattern. Poured in some oil and fired her up. Leak appears to be from one of the studs. There are no washers installed on the studs. Could this be a problem? At this point I suggest finding another cover and carefully look at the parts fiche to see if we are missing something. Any ideas?

Follow the link and look at item #6. It's a oil seal that looks like it may solve the problem. Picture only shows one is used but it seems you are only leaking from one stud. You could order one or put a request in the wanted area. May be a good idea to order a gasket also.

That seal goes in where the shaft for the lever is. I don't recall any seals around the studs for the cover.

Interesting post from Alwing17 that may also apply to your problem. Have never worked on a scavenge pump so not sure what is involved.

Does the bike go into neutral easily with the bike shut off? If so,I would suspect a broken scavenge pump in the rear of the engine.Since the clutch housing is lower than the crankcase sump, there is a pump there to remove excess oil from the clutch housing...If there was none, the clutches would be running in a bath of oil,and would not release properly. The clutch is sprayed with oil to lube it while its running, but not be immersed in oil. Simple to check...Run engine at idle for a few mins,
then shut off. Put a pan under the clutch cover and loosen the bolts, and 2 nuts a couple of turns. If there is a stream of oil that runs out, like about 1/4 to 1/2 quart, your scavenge pump is bad.. If just a small amount of oil,if any,you are OK. Most of the time ,the engine is spinning fast enough to engage the gears when at speed, because centrifugal force throws the oil out of the clutch basket to allow for easy shifting,at idle, the clutch is not spinning fast enough to throw the oil out of the basket. I wouldn't advise revving the motor up to 3-4000 revs and try to engage first gear...Don't ask!

Took the rear cover off one of the old engines I have here for grins. The scavenge pump is a pain to reach but can be done in a few hours. Worst part is the motor has to come out. No way to tell if this is where your problem lies. The explanation above could be why you loose so much oil. The pump could be blocked, worn out or the drive chain broken. I'll look up part numbers to see if the pump is the same for both the 1000 and 1100. I know this is drawing at straws but we are running out of ideas.
