Reasonable Pricing of a CX 500

for those of you that have M.B.S. (multiple bike syndrome) and have the "silver wing" models.
as our sponsors also have supplies for those bikes and they are popular with the "wing" crowd.

Look closely at the headstock label, the model should be GL500, for the naked model, if it came with all the plastics it will say GL500i, and to my knowledge it should all be the same color. at least that is how the 3 of mine are.

Well I done did it again and limped it home tonight. The carbs are in desperate need of cleaning as it only runs on both cylinders at just above idle They smell bad. It is a 1982 GL500I and I have brought home worse. Lots of cleaning and a new Master cylinder along with the carbs rebuilt. The gas tank is spotless inside and at least it is a start. It charges fine ans no leaks of any kind and the coolant is clean and full. Oil is clean. Thanks for the help with this one.

When I got my GL500 it acted like that too. In my case one of the carb manifolds was not seated on the carb right. But if it is the actual carbs Randakk has a kit for them :)

Murrayf on the CX forum (who buys/fixes up/sells a lot of old Hondas) recommends this master cylinder. I just installed one on Eccles and I like it so far...

Exactly as you mentioned the carbs were not seated in the manifolds well and the clamps are boogered up beyond repair. After fixing the manifolds this morning it was a wee bit better I got the right bowl off and it also needs a total clean job ( no big deal ) . I see that the GL uses dual discs and the CX is single I also see that the GL is recommending the 16MM piston master and CX gets a 14MM This seems logical but the masters I see with the 16mm do not have the brake switch like the one in the link. I will keep looking.
I am looking for the engine side badges that I believe say GL500 as they are both missing. along with the side cover Silverwing badges.

In North America all normally aspirated CX500 models, the GL500 and the CX650C came with a single front disc. Only the GL500I, GL650/650I, CX500T, CX650T and CX650E came with dual front discs.

You could go to extreme lengths to match the master cylinder with the caliper http://cx500forum.com/forum/cx-customiz ... inder.html but for most of us the one I linked is good enough. With Eccles' single front disc the lever doesn't move as far as it could so it would probably excellent with dual discs.

BTW: In case you are wondering why a CX650E based machine like Eccles has a single disc, I discovered many years ago that too much front brake is worse than not enough on a sidecar machine in slippery roads. When you apply the brakes the mass of the sidecar pushes the outfit sideways so you learn quickly to steer against it. The front tire has only so much available traction, especially on ice or snow, so if you are using a good part of it to stay in a straight line it becomes way too easy for dual discs to lock up the front wheel and when that happens you can neither steer nor brake. It is much better to have a single disc on the front and to learn to follow farther back and use the rear brake more.

After having the bike for several days I see that the tank and sidecovers are likely from a different bike. the bike has been repainted more than once from all the different stripes and slight mismatches. All in all it seems to be a good start. I bought the Randakk carb kit last night and checked the timing chain and all seems well. I hope to find a decent pair of the engine GL500 badges as mine are missing. I would like to replace the bellows over the drive shaft if someone has replacements Honda no longer does. Should I order the water pump seal and parts for stock figuring they will fail one day?? Or wait till then? So far it is pretty easy to work on. I hope to move the trunk back to the original position but that may need some mounting parts.
Thanks for the info along the way. If I could find someone with a Muse red that wants to trade for the silver tank and sidecovers would be great but not likely.
