82 CX500 Custom is keeping the garage company

for those of you that have M.B.S. (multiple bike syndrome) and have the "silver wing" models.
as our sponsors also have supplies for those bikes and they are popular with the "wing" crowd.

That makes sense...just for some reason I thought my 78 ran a little slower. That was a long time ago.... :-D

6th gear or a different 5th ratio would certainly be nice in the older wings.

As an owner of a CX500 Custom, I can definitely say they aren't really suited to highway or freeway riding.
My one sits on 5500 rpm to do 60 mph and will do so all day long, but it's more the fact that without a screen and high wide bars on it, the wind hitting you in the chest means you really have to hang on. It's more suited to city riding where the wide bars make it easy to manoeuvre.

70mph on my CX and the wife's GL500 is 6250 on the tach. If I keep it down to 60mph, I average 55mpg. At 70 it drops down into the low 40s. I have modified mine a little, but 2 years ago did a 4200 mile, 7 state tour very comfortably.

The CX's are a revvy little bugger but that engine really seems to smooth out at about 4500 rpm and stays smooth at least through 5500-6000. I find that above that it starts to feel a little stressed so when I've had mine on the highway I seem to find a sweet spot at about 60mph and keep it there. 95% of my current riding is done on city streets so the CX is great for that but as long as I don't need to cruise at 70 or be on the highway for more than a short blast I have found the CX to be just fine on the highway as well. That being said I love getting to run the 84 1200 down the road at 65. It's seems perfectly suited for 65-70mph cruising. Can't wait to get the 77 on the road next spring and see how that feels both in the city and on the highway.

Wow, that seat looks great on that bike. Is there a thread with more pics of it?

Thanks jtsound. The seat is from a Suzuki VL800. I'm not good at documenting stuff, but I think I've got some more pictures somewhere. I'll see what I can find.

I haven't taken Eccles or the GL500 I had before on any long trips, but I understand that they will cruise all day at 7000 RPM. One member of the Australian CX forum crossed Australia on her GL700 (same as GL650 but made for Japanese home market) in 5 days, pulling a trailer so they have lots of oomph if you let them run at higher revs. Don't forget that these bikes have more HP than contemporary Harleys with twice the displacement and a lot more weight that were considered suitable for touring.
