My latest project: moving the rad a foot to the right

for those of you that have M.B.S. (multiple bike syndrome) and have the "silver wing" models.
as our sponsors also have supplies for those bikes and they are popular with the "wing" crowd.

Was this done solely because of the filler neck position, or did you need a bigger rad for more cooling area?

I've been surprised by how quickly my oil stat opens to allow the oil cooler to come online, but I think my sidecar is probably a fair bit heavier than the one on the CX500.

Did it in fact run hot?

One of the few negatives about driving a sidecar outfit when it is really cold out is the wind that blows between the sidecar & the bike and freezes my right leg. The same wind pushes the warm air from the rad across my left leg, roasting it when it is above freezing. I have been thinking about moving the rad for a few years and last fall I figured out the basics but didn't have time to do it. I also want to put on higher handlebars and raise the fairing a bit so that I can sit a bit more upright. I intend to combine these projects by welding sections of U-channel to the fairing bracket (cowl stay) to raise the fairing and adding supports for the radiator to it at the same time. If I have time I intend to put a deflector with a door in it behind the rad & fan so that the heat will be directed below my foot on warm days but across my legs on cold days.
Adequate cooling in this machine is rarely an issue since it is usually only on the road from October to April (southern Ontario so we don't see -35c too often). The new rad is about the same area but a bit thinner (its also aluminum instead of brass if that makes any difference).

Oh, and its a CX650, not a CX500... Its sidecar is a Velorex 700 body on a Ural frame.

I haven't had any cooling issues on my 'Wing so far and its sidecar is pretty big & heavy (a modified Dnepr chair - it probably weighs close to 50 Lb. more than stock between the extra steel and the body filler & fibreglass). It does chug back the gas a lot more than it did without the sidecar, though.

Makes sense to use the waste heat to keep you warm.

I'd forgotten they did the 650 version.....and then they fitted a turbo to it and turned it into a hooligan machine, if I remember rightly. Known for spitting people off coming out of corners....

It's be interesting to weigh the rig. I happen to have a weighbridge within 50 yards of the house. I'll get the key tomorrow and check the weight.
If the bike's 260kg, I reckon the rig has to be 360kg at least.

I figure that my CX650E based winter machine weighs about 800-850 Lb (365-386 Kg) and the GoldWing weighs about 1000-1050 Lb (455-475 Kg) but these are educated guesses at best.

I think you will find that your 'Wing weighs a lot more than you think. Specified dry weights are published before production and based on the total of what the engineers think each of the parts will weigh. They are more accurate these days, but back when these bikes were made it was done with paper & pencil. They were almost always wrong and usually low (it is easy to leave some bits & pieces off of the list and until it actually in production they didn't know what all of the production parts really weighed. And they don't include the fluids - motor oil, suspension oil, fuel, coolant - something on the order of 50 Lb (23 Kg) for a 4 cylinder 'Wing. Not to mention whatever accessories you have added and whatever you have in the glove box &/or saddlebags.

I couldn't weigh it today but I'll check it tomorrow.
I'd be surprised if it's more than the Grinnall 3 wheeler though, and that's only around 400kg fully fuelled.

I'll try and weigh the solo bike as well.

Sorry I didn't get back to this sooner. I had a few minor setbacks that kept me from spending the time to post the pics until about 2 weeks ago when the drive I had temporarily stored the pics on became inaccessible. The pics are probably recoverable, but I won't have them back for a while.

I took a few pics while I was modifying/installing the lowers the other day. They aren't as clear as the ones that are being (hopefully) recovered and they don't show the plumbing between the thermostat housing & the top of the rad but they are better than nothing.

The story picks up again here http://cx500forum.com/index.php?/topic/ ... _p__228561
but if you want to skip to the "good part" its here http://cx500forum.com/index.php?/topic/ ... _p__229600
