9Ball;
Welcome. This is a GREAT club. You'll enjoy communicating with kindred spirits...
I too, don't like the side covers on my CAFE... Here is what I did.

I hope it helps.

I'm going to move this to the GL, CX forum. You may get better responses there with this one.

agree with robin1731, go and check on the GL/CX forum, as people are always parting bike parts there, and you may be able to pick up a replacement set. I have seen people there selling them in the past

Re: Side covers ideas ?
I guess this is better late than never:
If the pins on the side cover are broken you have 2 options:
1) Either glue the pin(s) back on with some sort of epoxy or form replacements from something like epoxy putty
2) Add studs to the frame, drill holes in the covers and fasten them on with acorn nuts. The studs could be bolts welded on but I prefer to use 5/16" threaded rod through the frame from side to side (the holes that the pins are supposed to go into are opposite each other in the pressed steel part of the frame and the space between them is enclosed) with nuts & fender washers on either side of the frame and more a nut near each outer end for the acorn nut to tighten against. If you curve the threaded rod so that the ends are perpendicular to the surfaces of the covers the acorn nuts (I use stainless but you could use chrome) & their washers will sit flat against the covers and look natural. I prefer this method because they absolutely can not fall off as you go down the road and nobody can steal them without tools.
