79 CX500?

for those of you that have M.B.S. (multiple bike syndrome) and have the "silver wing" models.
as our sponsors also have supplies for those bikes and they are popular with the "wing" crowd.

79 CX500?

#1

Post by acasper708 »

Does anyone have experience with a CX500? I'm gonna pick one up real cheap. It just needs the carbs rebuilt and cleaned up. It looks like a fun bike. Anything I should be worried about?

I really liked the cx500c I had. Wish at times I had not sold it when I moved from Oregon back to OK.

Quirks: the mechinical seal for the water pump can start to leak (you will get coolant out of the back top of the engine). It is a PITA to change if it is even still available.

the pulsar has both a high and low speed part. They also tended to go bad. Will still run if the high speed goes out, but will feel like it is missing. You will keep thinking it is the carbs, but it is not. I doubt the part is available anymore.... and to change, you have to take the back of the whole engine

Yea it looks like a few of them just go with a electric fan. Well he's sellin it to me for $200 so I really can't loose. If it turns out it has to many problems I can sell the bile for parts and make my money back. I've looked at a couple YouTube vids and they sound pretty sweet.

I would love to make it a cafe racer but it's for the wife and that wouldn't happen. But she said I can cut it up a bit. Maybe a bobber.

I did really like that low slung seat on my 500c

and, while not a wing, it had more than a couple of cross country trips and had 55+k on it when I sold it

Might also want to look up info on the timing chains. If they are not properly adjusted they will eat up areas in the front of the engine putting aluminum shavings in the oil.

Well I put some gas in it and a couple cranks and she started right up. But she's pissin gas out of the bowl tubes and the exhaust. So the floats are deffinetly stuck. Where can I find a blown up view of the carbs? I don't have a Haynes manual yet.
