Governor's Ride 2014

#1

Post by brokentoe »

For several years our Indiana governors have gone on a yearly ride with all interested bikers. This event is done in conjunction with ABATE, it's open to all on a donation basis and the money goes to a good cause. One of my friends has asked me to go for the last several years and finally this year I was able to attend. We met at the state house and had a few comments from Gov. Pence, recognition of ABATE, the Indiana National Guard (proceeds were going there this year) a prayer, and we were off on a State Police escorted trip. This was like no other ride I've been on. For one thing, we never set our foot on the ground from the time we left the statehouse until we got to our lunch donation except for one time we pulled over for an ambulance. The State Police did a fantastic job stopping traffic in all directions. It was amazing. People were out on their porches waving at Gov. Pence and all of the bikers, video cameras were rolling, signs were waving. It was almost like being in a parade. All together there may have been 4 or 5 hundred bikers, I never did hear a count. The 4 guys I was traveling with decided in early afternoon to abandon the main group and head back a little early to beat some rain that we saw on radar. It was a fun 200 miles. I don't know if other states do this but it's a good event. I hate to say it but I think the governor rode a Softtail.

That is a good ride. Glad you got to do it. Similar thing up here. Called the Mayor's ride. They join up in Ft. Wayne and ride down here to Decatur. Only about 20 miles. But there are usually a few hundred bikes. Then there is a big shindig here in town. Food vendors, bands, professional stunt riders. Pretty big thing for a town this size (about 10,000 ppl). Always respectful riders. The place is pretty clean after they leave.

I've always wanted to do that ride. I know Mitch Daniels always led it, but didn't realize the current governor continued the tradition. I'm glad you and your crew got to go!
When is the next bike night at the "Wheel In"?

I was in Madison IN at the River Boat Inn that weekend with my other truck club Nationals and saw all the Bikes. Everyone seems to had fun, what a nice bunch of folks we even had one guy as a judge at our Show and Shine.

I have a couple of other things I "should" do tomorrow night, but I just might be able to Steer In . The '77 needs some road time.

That makes it more tempting for me to go, but I just got a new chain saw yesterday and I think I'm going to cut down a tree tonight.

Brokentoe: I was up until 2am this morning patching a hole in a '97 Camry gas tank so my 23yr old could take a road trip. I think I'll just sit on the patio tonight and watch it get dark.
I would gladly take a day off work sometime in the next few months to do a Gnaw Bone Run. Or run up to Decatur and distract Robin1731 for an afternoon. Or run over to Shades S.P. for lunch and loop back around on 136.

Sounds like a plan, if you don't mind me riding my Harley. I have a love/hate relationship with my wing and right now I'm in the hate part of the relationship.
I'll send a PM on some dates.
