When you drop the cam on the concrete floor and snap off the tach/fuel pump gear, electric is your only option!

Thanks, I might try that.

Thanks all, I think the bike turned out pretty well and is fun to ride but looking back over my list of purchases to turn a $75 bike into this "calendar queen" hardly seems like a wise choice, but it has been fun and I did learn some new tricks along the way.

If you do need to replace the neutral switch this is what I learned from doing mine a few years ago.

The flexing of the frame as outlined in the FSM is necessary to gain any additional amount of space you need to work in close quarters. Leave the small hex head bolt that holds the wiring still in the switch after backing it out a few turns, since you may need to get under the head to pry it outward from there. I didn't and the old switch was stuck in there and wouldn't move after I removed the small retaining bracket that holds the switch into the block, so there was nothing left to get a hold of to pull/pry on the switch. I got lucky and shifted the transmission shifter up and down and the movement of the internal shift drum popped the switch out about 1/3 of the way and then I could then grab it.
Add the sensor wire to the new switch before you push it into the case opening, since it is almost impossible to add the wiring and little screw afterwards. :-?

Too cold yesterday to test ride the CB900 I have been working on so I put Miss February back on the lift and pulled the neutral switch out. (that makes it sound easy, it was not!) I tried to disassemble the neutral switch to clean it but it was clear I was going to destroy it in the process so I just put on some gloves and worked it in a container of gasoline, then blew it out good and repeated in a container of lacquer thinner, (just grasping here). The meter indicates it is working but it is a little iffy so I went ahead and put a new one on order. I think I will go ahead and install the old one enough to to test it in the bike. If it works I will button up and change the oil. The new one isn't expected for a week and I can always use a spare as it fits so many different bikes.

The light is just a standard 12v version (be aware there are some cheap plastic ones too) I have used them on several bikes now as they are high quality and seem to fit the bikes nicely.

I have an update on the neutral switch also. The cleaned switch didn't work so I took it apart with the help of a Dremmel tool and cleaned it up then reassembled using JB weld to replace the plastic. That appeared to work when tested for continuity by meter but not in the bike. Not sure of the cause but it isn't a false ground as suggested by Hott as the light goes out when the wire is disconnected from the switch. So at the moment I will just have to wait for the new one to arrive.

Next time I think I will just clean the assembled switch with Muriatic acid. I don't think there is any part that would be harmed and the acid will do a good job of cleaning the brass and steel.

Got the new neutral sensor installed and it works great. Bike is now up for sale.
I was having trouble with the bolt that holds the sensor in place. Local tool suppliers didn't have an offset metric of the right size so I ground down a 10mm socket and welded it onto the end of an old flat blade screw driver. Worked great.
