Re: Buffet Racer: Propav8r's '78 GL1000
I cut off the center stand last night...it was in the way of my exhaust, and since I've got a motorcycle jack, it's not terribly useful in the shop. The pin was rusted solid in the center stand, thus the cutting. I did leave the tabs on the frame in case I ever wanted to put it back in the future.
Got my exhaust tacked up too. I can't weld, so I'll just run this over to a buddy this evening to finish it off. The long pipes will be cut down quite a bit to fit my mufflers.

Mount that center stand on the wall and use it to hang stuff.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

Re: Buffet Racer: Propav8r's '78 GL1000
Thanks Sunnbobb!
Redid the brakes last night. Started with these grungy (but surprisingly operational) front calipers
Broke them down, rebuilt them, and cleaned them up before bolting them back on the bike.
I thought about painting them, but I didn't have any high-temp paint on the shelf, so they'll just stay bare aluminum for now.
Took the old grungy copper gaskets
Annealed them
And after quenching, they're soft and malleable again.
Spent about an hour bleeding the front brakes. Man, that was frustrating. I've got a firm lever now, but I think I'm gonna bleed them a little more just to be sure. I did crack the banjos open, but there's a bleeder at the top of the junction block that may still give me a little air.
Moved on to the rear brake, which bled surprisingly easy.
I didn't rebuild the rear master or caliper...the master still has a little stiction in it, but I'm hoping that'll work itself out with time. It's been sitting on the shelf for a long time.
I wound up going down a bit on the front master. It's now a 16mm bore instead of the stock 11/16", so that should help out a bit. We'll see how that works out.
At this point, I just need to put some clear on the body panels, mount my mufflers, and take it for a test ride!

Yep, very common in the aviation community. I learned it while working on a DC-3 that our local aviation museum used to fly around. You have to use a PROPANE torch though. Anything hotter (Mapp, acetylene, etc.) will melt the copper.Easter wrote:thanks for the tip on the copper gasket, looks like something I should have known but didn't.
The parts store had 10mm copper washers in stock, but for $3.39 each...I'm not paying $40 for a handful of washers.

Re: Buffet Racer: Propav8r's '78 GL1000
I tried the copper method on exhaust crush gaskets, but it didn't work as advertised. Perhaps my gaskets were t copper as I have read that aftermarket ones are not real copper any more. I have done it to copper head gaskets though.

Re: Buffet Racer: Propav8r's '78 GL1000
OH MY GOD IT WORKS!!!!!
It's got a little stumble/miss off idle, but above 1300rpm, it's as smooth as butter.

bump it up to 1000 or 1100. Might fix the problem

I should probably put the mufflers on too before I start messing with the carbs too much.

Re: Buffet Racer: Propav8r's '78 GL1000
Mufflers are a must. The engine needs some back pressure. But the engine needs at least 1000 RPM assuming stock advance unit is being used. If Increasing the RPM's doesn't help, check the mechanical advance unit
