Dude, memories flood in. And now a bit of a hole in your life. Very sorry to hear of your loss. Your remarkable father has taught you what to do w/ your hands, has he not? Now, just make him proud.

Thank you gentlemen for your messages of condolences and support.

I've been down to Cape Town to spend some time with the family, my mom, brothers and sister. I was again bowled over by my mother's strength. My father was a remarkable man, and he married a remarkable woman.

I also found some solace in the garage before flying down, just me, the Wing and my Dad.

I've copied my post from the technical thread and pasted it here. My Wing therapy has proved to be good for both me and the bike:

Imvubu is back, and finally running like the muscle bike I expected her to be!

Hindsight is an exact science, and after finding the problem I realized how simple the explanation actually was...

I managed to find a used carb set that the seller assured me was in perfect condition and came off a running 1983 model. '83 had removable idle jets so I thought it worth chasing down. It turned out that the seller had a very vivid imagination, to put it mildly. I brought them home anyway, at an offer to match his silly description. At home I checked the serial numbers and it turned out they were 1980 carbs with the pressed in jets, so the seller still got the last laugh. I ended up with an expensive doorstop.

Despondently I pulled my own carbs again and stripped them down completely as for a rebuild. Then I found a common problem on three of the carbs. The air feed intake channels, below the plastic cover to the main jet and emulsion tubes, had become completely blocked again!!!!!!

There must have been residual gunk left in the channels that collapsed on itsself and blocked up the air feeds again. Instead of supplying a fine emulsified mist to the motor only larger droplets of fuel were passing through and showing on the plugs that the burn was too rich. However the exhaust gasses indicated that the burn was too lean. Not enough of the big drops were passing through the carbs, so essentially the mixture was too lean for the motor to run properly.

As I said a very simple explanation in the end and yet one of the last things that came to mind. I kept chasing the wrong stuff simply because I accepted I had cleaned those channels, and I didn't even think an air channel would become blocked again. To me a fuel blockage was much more likely, as I also found two of the accelerator pump circuit jets were blocked again.

Look at this as a blessing in desguise. If it hadn't acted up, who knows what would have happen with the one adjuster loose and flopping around. A pain in the butt, but in the end it's all good.

ericheath, the eternal optimist pointing out the bright side ;)

But you are absolutely right. That little valve adjuster could have cost me a head and possibly even a damaged piston, probably far from home as Murphy's law dictates. As a bonus I've also gotten to know my Wing and all it's workings pretty intimately, and I am starting to feel she is no longer the boss of me

Thank you for your message Harald, it feels like only yesterday that I was passing my condolences on to you....

Poor Imvubu has been untouched and unridden since the beginning of last month, just too much happening at the moment. I am however knee deep in work on my daily rider, a 650 vstrom. She's been running poorly of late and I thought that her 96000 km service would sort her. Unfortunately new plugs etc just made it worse so I had to go in deeper, starting with valve clearances. I've learned quite a bit from the Wing, but she didn't prepare me for shim under bucket valve clearances, not to mention TBS, STV, TPS, PTSD, etc etc

The simple Goldwing is a walk in the park in comparison
