Gulf Oil Goldwing racer aka. GULFWING

Hopefully some of you have been following the Orange Crush build, which is nearing completion (thank god). So We bought a donor GL1100 to use as a parts bike for Orange Crush. Well, looks like Ive caught the GL bug. I can't get rid of that one now that I see for myself the potential these bikes have.

So with that, we break ground on the Gulf oil Goldwing Racer. It's not gonna be a real racer, just a tribute bike I guess.

We're all probably familiar with the Gulf Oil paint scheme from movies and events like Le Mans and the Porsche 917 racecars. Im a vintage Porsche guy. I own one. Ive built 3 of them. I LOVE the Gulf Oil paint scheme. So it's time to do the same to a GL.

Here is the bike as it sits tonight....

It's depressing.... she deserves better. The motor make a loud almost knock sound at idle, but the carbs were shot, timing belts are probably off, valves need to be adjusted. Anyone know of a diagram to make an engine stand for these motors?

Anyways. It may call for a motor rebuild, but she's gonna get Webber carbs, race bars, going to try to source a full race front fairing, and of course, a very pretty 510 Color-Werks paint job.

So with that, we broke ground today.

And started with.......

THE BATTERY BOX! Lol.... stupid I know, but I had it off the bike, and I wanted to paint something blue and orange.

Sandblasted, ready for paint.

Etch primer, then sealer was applied

Then the orange was applied to the battery box door, and blue to the battery box itself.

I'll post pics of them together, but there you have it. Build #2 is underway

After watching your Orange Crush come together so beautifully, I'll be following this one also.

Here are a couple of shots of my engine cradle. I bolted the separate pieces to the engine to insure geometry, and tack welded them together. After removing the tacked together assemblies I finish welded the thing. The engine stand is from Harbor Freight.

It worked out well, but the engine stand pivot could have been positioned better. It's a bit out of balance for rolling the engine over.
I tried to leave clearance to the block for better access for painting and wrenching.

I love that color scheme. Are you going to opt for a 'Gulf' logo on the tank/side cover?

Yea, The logos will be 3" ones on the side covers, 6" ones on the front fairing and seat. It will have some sot of a Honda racing logo on the shelter. Thinking a silver and bronze accented engine case. Gulf blue frame with orange accents.

going to try to strip the bike down fully this weekend.
