Hey Folks,

I was looking to mod my exhaust and had a couple of questions.

I would like to terminate my exhaust under my bike, but I don't want my bike to be loud. Has any one done this?

If I do run straight pipes after the headers and terminate under my bike, is that crazy loud and or stupid?

I would like to run the shortest cherry bombs after my headers (I even like the red color) has anyone seen this done and would that be crazy loud.

I have never modded anything in my life and I am certainly enjoying this. I just recently carbon wrapped all my body work in black and switched out my bars to cafe. I'll post a pic soon.

Thanks for your input.

You'll be right at home with the West Virginia sound.. anim-cheers1
It wont sound like a 56 Olds that dropped its muffler, more like a Subaru. lolol
Seriously Bro there is more involved than the mere straight pipe or Cheery bombs.
You might start thinking about re jetting the carbs while you're at it. Doable ,though.
What part of West By God Virginia are you from.

Huh,

Probably the one sound I hate the most is the sound of a Subaru. I think they all sound like Briggs and Strattons.

Why do you have to rejet the carbs? Oh and thanks for the help on this. I would never have known.

I am in Martinsburg. You familiar with West by God Virginia?

I had to rejet my carbs but it was worth it. Loud? Yes, but it's all behind you anyway. There is a Wing on youtube with straight pipes and it sounds pretty good. Good luck with your project

Sure enough. I grew up in Weirton.I don't know for sure that you will have to re jet .Each muffler is different. If the Muffler provides enough back pressure you will not need to re jet. But,if you run straight pipes or a muffler with out Baffles, you can count on re jetting. There is a fine balance between what the Carbs suck in and the mufflers exhaust rate. Get the rate of exhaust out of whack like you will be with running straight pipes and the motor will starve for fuel (run lean) restrict the air inflow and the motor will run rich much like running with the choke on. It's always a good idea when you make changes to the Muffler system and or the intake to do plug coloration test in making sure your fuel intake and exhaust is running in balance..

I'm running the 81 1100 mufflers without their baffles and I'm running lean on all fours.

my exaust looks like straight pipes but i made my own baffles inside the pipes mellowed the sound down as well as gave it a deeper tone. straight was too much for me and had to raspy of a tone for me.

I got to wearing ear plugs with mine. Not so much that I don't like the raw sound ,I do, it's just that I discovered another acoustic sound doing so that is very pleasing to my ears.

My neighbors love it when I get on it.From the looks in their faces it is as though they too aught to be doing it or they wished they could .

I live in one of those hoyte toite areas and they often look at me and shake there head. Often I just don't fit in in this area. I'm one of the only ones in this area of town that works in my garage. Besides, I've always heard loud pipes saves lives- at least that's what my exhaust guy says. There must be some truth to that since I'm still here???

while i guess you and your exhaust guy are some sort of special. are you a full patch holder, or just a prospect? truth is more rights have been lost by loud pipes, then lives have been saved. lives are saved by driving responsibly, and being educated in the safe handling of a motorcycle. that outlaw attitude of "LOUD PIPES SAVING LIVES" is one of the stupidest, uninformed thinks i have ever heard. thats just my informed opinion...and probably that of your neighbors

Trying to justify loud pipes on a bike is like trying to justfy why you don't like air hiting your face when riding.
Live and let live is what I say. tumb2 :crosso

Oh no, I see this thread going down THAT road again....

We should just stick to the thread and give him some options to think about. I've seen a few threads like this get a little ugly.

Bottom line is , do whatever you want it's your ride. If you want to put straight pipes on there, give it a try. Just know that you might have to re-jet. Actually you probably should re-jet. If you don't know how, you can ask, someone can help you with that. If you want cherry bombs on there, it's gonna be loud and you're bound to get the wrong kind of attention from the local po-po. You'll also need to re-jet or you run the risk of further damage. If you don't want to re-jet and you wanna run it lean or rich, it's your bike and your risk.

I've been down this road before and I went with some HD mufflers just to keep a little backpressure. I don't want to abuse the innards of the bike. If you do run straight pipes, you can pick up some small baffles to fit inside that will quiet things down a little and add a little backpressure. This might give you the best compromise.
