in the state of va. turn signals are not required on a motorcycle. if they are there they must work. however if they can fuction as running lights, all bets are off. i know because cyborg failed its first va. inspection because of the turn signals. when informed the inspector, a motorcycle dealer, that they were running lights and not turn signals, and that i had no turn signals, it passed. go figure.

hmmm interesting. My Black bike has been inspected twice by Honda of Norfolk and nothing was said at all about the lights. They did tell me to step away from the bike so they could get some pictures of it

I think dodge/chrysler is doing that now in canada where daytime running lights are mandatory. I've seen various trucks and vans that turn off one headlight when the signal light is on, it seems overly complicated to me. I wonder how many people have been stopped for a burnt out headlight when dodge started this nonsense?

Okay so I like the small LED turn signals and not the big ones. I would also mount them in close. And really I know the man may stop you but no one on the road see's a motorcycle much less it's turn signal! I didn't even put them on my last bike. But here you don't have to have them. I recomend that you be able to use your left arm for signals on the off chance that the man is right behind you. I do that and don't get bothered for turn signals anyway. The man don't care about signaling when you just sucked the paint right off the side of his car when you passed. Man that was funny. Oh sorry started thinking about a particular incident.

So many of these laws need to re-evaluated since LED technology has come about.

It's possible to have a much brighter light with a smaller size than ever before.

Not to mention that the apparent contrast (between off and on) is higher due to the instantaneous switching nature of the bulb.

Furthermore, the lack of band overlap causes any two light sources to be much more easily distinguished, and can therefore be placed closer to one another.

Gone are the days of amber bulbs and red plastic filters; I think the "altezo" movement in the ricer communities have shown that visibility is easily acheived and usually improved over stock by this technology.

It's time for a revolution. A geeky and extremely dull one, but a revolution nonetheless.

I still say the rule is a good one - if the headlight is bright enough to light up the road you can't see any other light that is close to it.

It always amazes me that the lights on some of the vehicles on the road were actually allowed to go into production. Form should at least consider function, even if it isn't going to follow it.

I'm a believer that form should always follow function - the designs that work best always look best too.

For me, a bike with nowhere to carry anything is pretty much a paperweight. If I can't carry my lunch without a backpack I'm not likely to drive it to work (or anywhere else for that matter). LED signals that are barely noticable when off but impossible to ignore when in use could easily be mounted in the back edge of a rack or on (in?) saddlebags.

Most jurisdictions don't require electric turn signals on bikes, but if they are there they must work. It is assumed that if you have electric signals you will tend to use them instead of using your arm.

There is also the issue of liability - if your signals don't meet regs and someone hits you while you are turning all he has to say is "I did not see him signal" and you will be found liable.

i think alot of the laws pertaining to motorcycles are passed by people who don't even know what a motorcycle is, or how they operate. alot of these laws cry out to be broken........in the name of safty

Turn signals are safety appliances that can save your life.

Replacing signals that are well located and can be seen clearly with ones that are not easy for other road users to see is like putting on a quieter horn because it looks nice - I'm sure there are some that would, but they should probably wear helmets for walking too.
