My '77 GL1000 "Roadster"

#1

Post by Valvesprung »

Picked this bike up right about a year ago for $500. It ran, but quite poorly. I pretty much knew exactly how I wanted the bike before I began, and we set to work pretty quick. Hard to tell in the pics, but the black is all rattle can and a poor job at that. The wheels however, were done right and have stainless spokes and brass nipples (Score!)

Well as my budget came and went and we ran into headache after headache (mostly carb related), things were drug out much further than I expected. All said though, it came out exactly how I wanted it.

Mod list:
-Emgo Magna Wide Bars
-black headlight ears with non-sealed 8" headlight
-lowered stock gauge mounts
-Biltwell grips
-Externally wired controls from a '79
-Modern 7/8" master cylinder with stainless lines on rebuilt stock calipers (new pads)
-Progressive fork springs
-Upgraded black shocks
-Sportster XL1200R Roadster seat
-bobbed and lowered front fender
-fork gaiters
-CB500T rear fender
-Lucas style tail lamp
-alloy mini turn signals
-Painted in 2010 Toyota 4Runner factory grey
-Stock headers with modified mid-pipes and Werks slip-on mufflers from a prototype exhaust we had
-Dyna mini coils
-wrinkle black finish on valve covers and timing belt covers
-rebuilt carbs top to bottom
-new valve stem seals and all gaskets

Still need to build a small removable sissy bar and rear pegs for two-up riding

This thing is way better than I ever hoped. I friggin love riding it...and at 160lbs I get a lot of odd looks on such a big bike :P

Great looking bike! What kind of exhaust / cans did you go with? Any videos of the bike running? I'd love to hear what it sounds like.

Again, nice job!

Nice job. Looks good. Tuck the Dyna wires under the crankcase breather and they route petty cleanly.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

Newell, they are a pair of Werks slip-on mufflers that came off of a prototype system we had laying around from a late model Sportster. They sounds fantastic, and fairly loud. Nice low burble with plenty of shriek and spit to keep you awake :P

I have a video, but only ever uploaded it to Facebook and then deleted it. I'll snag another one soon and will post it :-D

Great bike - and I agree with Norbert (especially on the TF)
- Life is not about waiting for the storms to pass. It's about learning to ride in the rain.

Great! Can't wait to hear it. The other exhausts that I've heard for these bikes just don't do it for me. I'm looking for more of a sport bike sound versus the stock "fluttering" sound, if you know what I mean.

This exhaust is exactly that. Much smoother sounds than the standard tapered Sportster style mufflers. Has a smooth warm sound and definitely sounds like a proper 4-banger when it's spun up.
