That's a great idea, thanks!

Got the new clutch in and it's a good thing I decided to change it while the motor was out...the plates in the new motor were very worn and the damping plate was falling apart! Now I just have to put the new timing belts on and it's ready to go back in the frame.

I also ordered the Dyna 3ohm coils and spark wire set to go with my ignition, another few weekends and it should be all back together and ready for the bodywork to be done

Ok...I need some help here guys! I changed my timing belts tonight and I've never done it before. Everything went well, but no matter what what I tried I could not get the left cam mark lined up perfectly once the tension was set. It's about a half tooth early when everything else is lined up. I did some research and see that others have had this issue as well and some people said its how t is and others said it can be fixed....I need some opinions. Here's how it looks:

Right side and T1 timing mark are bang on to my eyes

Am I missing something or is this ok? The motor is ready to go back in the frame and I want to get this right

You won't get any closer, as long as the camshaft pulley is indexed correctly on the camshaft's woodruff key, and its complementing timing belt is properly tensioned.

On my '75 GL1000, the left side camshaft pulley is perfectly aligned with its static timing mark, at the centered T1 mark in the timing hole.
But, the right side camshaft pulley is off 1/2 tooth from perfect alignment with its static timing mark, at the same centered T1 mark alignment.

Just the reverse of your respective engine camshaft pulleys' alignment . It is what is. ;)

Motor full of fresh oil and all ready to go back in the frame

Testing fitting my new rear shocks which arrived today, they fit in very well with the color scheme I have going but it remains to be seen if they are any good. Hopefully better than the 40yr old rusty stockers. They are also about an inch longer as I'm trying to level out the stance.

Big day!

Managed to scratch the paint on the motor when I was wiggling it onto the shaft drive :( ah well, will mask and re spray that area tomorrow

When they say to attach the neutral light wire before you mount the motor they really mean it! Terrible place for it and I learned the hard way.
But finally success!

Very very nice :2thumbs
That looks like a nice CX in the background too?

I scratched my stator cover in exactly the same way (luckily mine was small enough to leave)

If I may make a suggestion - seeing as you are going to respray that scratch, maybe consider painting the fuel pump at the same time..sticks out a little IMO

Good eye! There are two CX's in the garage right now that my buddy picked up in the last week. Also have a nice xs650 that comes to visit from time to time.

I thought about painting the fuel pump before but in the end I decided to leave it. It matches the color of the carb intakes, etc. I'm sure to have the only cafe gold wing where I live and the motor is really the most unique part of them, so I wanted it to stick out and draw attention. Good suggestion tho! Now I'll probably spend the next week looking at it and second guessing myself.

Not too much progress over the weekend as I was at a wedding. Today I received my new Dyna coils and my signal lights. I've set aside Saturday to get the wiring all put back in and hopefully see if she starts. This evening I figured out the signals and got them mounted. I'm pretty happy with the results.
