Re: New to Motorcycles, in love with NGWs!
After some in depth Googling, looks like a 1984 Goldwing Interstate. Which doesn't seem to be as much of a straight-shot conversion as a GL1000. Trying not to get into the habit of buying multiple vehicles for parts. lol That's how MBS starts, (Or MVS)... Back in my Jeep days I had 8 Jeep Wagoneers, then in my VW phase, 4 VW's at one time... for the past 2 years, I've been a "good boy" and kept it down to just one vehicle. Haha
But....the seller said I have first dibs... an hour and a half in traffic, with 3 kids, isn't that bad is it? Old habits die hard.

Welcome to NGW. I've been riding for over 53 years. I live by two rules; Ride like you are invisible because drivers do not see you. The second rule is ride your own ride. So many times riders try to keep up and find themselves in over their head in curves. Be safe and get to know your bike.
BTW Goldwings have their quirks but are very reliable once they are dialed in.

Re: New to Motorcycles, in love with NGWs!
I'm going to show restraint and let the '84 interstate go. I really want a GL1000, even the wife said she would prefer a '76. (She was born in '76).
Happy wife, Happy Life.

Re: New to Motorcycles, in love with NGWs!
Welcome! I didn't start riding until I was 50. Started with a '76 cb400 (My uncle's, may he RIP) and then spent a whopping $275 on a 77 GL1000. I'm 6'2" (fatter than you!) and quite comfy on it. She is fully dressed with the original Vetter stuff. I have an engine guard with foot pegs if I want to stretch on the highway, but the upright position is fine with me. She does have a king and queen seat. I used Randakk's kit on the carb and modified the ignition a bit. Thinking of a c5 ignition. Perfectly happy with her as she runs now!
I need to remember to keep my expectations tiny so I don't end up so whiny.

Re: New to Motorcycles, in love with NGWs!
Well, she's not perfect, but she's mine... Finally managed to find a cheap one locally. Sadly I think I overpaid ($500), bought sight-unseen due to competition. 1978 Goldwing w/ poorly removed Vetter package. It looks like it sat in a field for 10 years, then moved to the garage I found it in for the last 20. Odo Says 22K Miles (probably 122K though...)
Got it stripped down, it needs:
The plus side?
It was already upgraded to Dyna S ignition, and the fuses looked new... Oh, and for some reason, the gas tank was rust free... I think I was more excited by that than hearing it run.... Which btw, it does run. Followed Randakk's advise on startup, took a few cranks, but started on it's own after manually adjusting the choke and throttle. So much smoke, but once it hit idle, I was grinning ear to ear. This is the first motorcycle I've ever worked on, I'm so stoked managed to get it running in a day.
For $100 I picked up another '78 Parts bike from a member here, (Doubleminded). Anyway, with all the spares parts from this one, I think most of my problems are solved. The only hurdle left is convincing the wife it was a good idea.... (She wanted to wait until after our MSF Course, and to buy one already road-ready...), she comes home Friday...
Without further adieu:
I've been trying to upload a video to Youtube, but it's the App on my phone keeps crashing. :/
Got it stripped down, it needs:
- Timing Belts
New ignition key
Choke cable
Throttle cable
Brake lines
Fuel Lines
Wiring harness
Center stand needs to be Re-welded
Right side exhaust is rusted through
All fairings need to be stripped and painted. (was red?, then blue, then spray painted black, badly
Tires
Gauge cluster
headlight bezel
Valve cover gaskets
Air Filterbox Gasket
Pretty much every screw and bolt is rusted.
The plus side?

Congrats on the bike. At least it runs. In my book $500 for a running bike with title is a very good deal.

Re: New to Motorcycles, in love with NGWs!
Only just found this thread so a belated welcome from the UK. 500 dollars doesn't sound to bad, even with all the work that you need to do. My bike has been a bit of a money bit, but as you said, it's mine!
Got one question to ask from your first post. You say you commute 14 miles one way! So how far is it back again?
Enjoy the journey and don't listen to the anti GL propaganda, they are great bikes.

Re: New to Motorcycles, in love with NGWs!
A top tip. If you haven't already done so, when fitting the throttle cables, it's easier to start at the handle bars, don't ask how I found that out!

Re: New to Motorcycles, in love with NGWs!
It depends on traffic. Dallas is notorious for horrible traffic, so sometimes I have to go 7 miles out of my way (21 miles) just to get home at a reasonable time. I leave for work at 6am, so luckily beat all traffic, but at 5pm it can take over an hour to do the same commute.chewy999 wrote: Got one question to ask from your first post. Thanks everyone for the advice and welcomes. I can't wait to get these fairings media blasted. Ordered the first round of parts last night, started it this morning just to hear it run. Still can't believe it's mine.
