Hi all,
I recently (back in December) picked up a 75 GL1000 for a steal ($300) but of course it wasn't running. It was also missing a couple of pieces (hinge pins for the sides of the false tank for one) and had previously been fitted with a fairing and hard bags that were never properly installed. The wiring harness was a mess - heavily modified by someone who thought that "twist and tape" was a good long-term solution... they added a LOT of extra crap to it too. I have no idea what they were going for. There was actually a lot of evidence that multiple previous owners with different levels of skill had made modifications. Some were very professional and clean. Others were laughable. AAAANYway... Two months later after a total engine teardown and overhaul, complete carb rebuild using one of Randakk's kits she got her first test ride in who knows how many years just yesterday. She runs great! I definitely need to tweak the valve timing and synchronize the carbs (and probably adjust the ignition timing a bit - one of the POs had installed (badly) a Dyna kit but I yanked it favoring a set of Black Bomber points. Dunno why, it just seems proper to have this bike running with points. I got her gas tank scrubbed out at a local radiator shop (it looks NEW inside. It's amazing). New timing belts, new spark plug caps, a series of oil changes (again, as recommended by Randakk - SAE30, SAE30+ATF, then actual motorcycle 10W-40) and we're good! I'm pretty excited. I have two other bikes - both Hondas (an 84 VT700 and an '04 Shadow VLX) - but this is now the one I am the most internally familiar with. I have rebuilt and rejetted the carbs on both of the others and tuned and tweaked the air intake and had to replace the stator and starter clutch on the VT700 but otherwise have never had to have them any further apart than that so this level of rebuild is pretty gratifying for me. I'm looking for an original-style GL1000 seat and handlebars as well as the turn signal mounting posts but other than that, she's quite complete and very rideable. Lovely fun. Anyway, new to the forum and looking forward to interactions.

I've got to say, I was truly impressed by the smooth flow of power when I twisted the throttle! Between that and the low center of gravity the bike does not feel NEARLY as big as it is... except when you're pushing it backwards with your feet. I think my time at the gym is paying off =D
