I was there, about a half mile west of the crowd on property that backed up to the river.
I have some similar photos somewhere.
One of my favorites photos shows a group of people on the opposite side of the gorge. They painted a bullseye on a bed sheet & lowered it down the side of the canyon about 50 feet.

I was just 14. IIRC I watched it on TV and was really disappointed. I idolized Evel and I think he pulled the plug early in the jump. I remember seeing Evel on the Wide world of sports on the night before the jump. He said he would rather go out as a flaming comet than fade away like a cold frozen planet. Man was he drunk !!

We rode our 1972 650 Yamaha's ($1,313 otd new) up there from the S.f bay area @ 600+ miles, which was my first long trip on a motorcycle.

We camped at a small lake above Shoshone Falls were the first picture was taken and far enough away from the HD party encampment way below us where a Cadillac was torched-show us your ---- etc, was the norm. The jump was one huge party but we had a good time @ at tender age. We ended up at Golden, Co to taste Coors finest at the brewery then headed back home, where I promptly bought a used 74 CB 750 thank goodness :<)

Poor Evel. He should have talked with NASA before he strapped himself into that roman candle and lit the fuse. He might've made it then! lolol

Those are great pics. Thanks for sharing. I wasn't there, but was a teenager at the time and remember it well.

I thought Evel was the coolest dude on the planet, at the time, and because of him I spent alot of time airborne on my Honda SL-100.
