Wingless for the moment

#1

Post by C5Paul »

I just sold my '76 and '78 GL1000 bikes. This is the first time in years I've been without one.
We used the bikes for many tests and designed the C5 ignition using them. The garage is strangely empty.

Good news though...I've never owned a 1200 and I'm looking for one as a new project. I've got a partially built sidecar and we'll be playing with some new coils. The GL1200 is packed with wiring and should be the perfect platform for testing the new "mini" coils.

Any suggestions on what year to look for? I'm not that interested in fuel injection but am open to all ideas you might have about the pro/cons for building a dual sport - adventure Wing.

I've wanted a 1200 standard. Hard to find though.

Really really like my 84 but,I've heard the ignition pickups are in the back of the motor.Never had mine apart so can't say for fact.I DO know the 85 and up have them at the front, under the belt covers.Maybe easier for you to play with?

84 is a 1 year only tall gearing, dunno about pulling x-tra weight with it, prob better with newer models,

i gotta fiddle way more with the 84-1200, vs an 82-1100, from a stop too,

and yes, a pg on an 84 failing away from home, vs the other years, could turn into big dough to fix and or be a pia to retrieve

Dumb question...are the pickups on that similar to the GL1100? If so i'm familiar with that already. I seem to recall my friend Louis saying the '84 was unique in several ways. The ignition might have been one of those items.

If the cylinder heads are the same it wont matter for me. What about coil location? Were they all the same?

Thanks for the help!!

similar in that they are at the back of the engine and a pain to deal with, pretty sure n/a new

1200 went electronic box advance and 84 PGs are a 1 year only deal, but other model (non gw) honda PGs might be adaptable

yes the 84 pick ups are in the back AND not available from Honda. The 85-87 pickup is in the front and available. CDI box is not available for any. The early 84's had stator issues, but I bet by now they have all been replaced, so any stator issue now is because of the age of the bikes. Also, the earlier ones had issues with the place where the rear wheel bearing go into the wheel getting slightly enlarged. Like any old wing, splines can b an issue as well. There are two O-rings where it goes into the rear wheel, but who knows if PO's ever checked.

Other than that, hmmmmm..... a sidecar on a 1200, not that is a concept anim-cheers1 Actually, it is the best 4 cylinder wing for a sidecar!
