Broken screw - right upper motor mount

#1

Post by odyssey »

Screw was rusty and it broke when I tried to take it out. When the impact driver method failed, I started drilling the screw out. What would you do at this point? Drill a bigger hole and place an insert? Challenges...I would appreciate your input.

I just saw post somewhere that alum , the stuff they use to make pickles, will eat away the steel without touching the aluminum! You need to create a way to make a pool to hold the solution. This guy rtv'd an aluminum pop can around the bolt and the offending screw was dissolved in hours. Try youtube search.
You look to be making good progress, one more drill size may get to the rest of it...

I don't use the upper mounts on most of my bikes. Never had a problem. Don't worry about it

If you are dead set on getting it out, there is enough on the backside to weld to. Welding the center will cause it to pull away (contract inward as it cools) and break loose.

There are a couple others here who've had that whole ear break off. They just run it like Cyborg. I had one break and was able to weld a piece to it and get it out. It probably needs the heat to break it free. Interesting to try that alum. I don't think I'm eating pickles any more- not.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

Whenever I have a stuck bolt, the first thing I do is douse it with PB Blaster... let it soak in for a couple of hours at least. You might also try heating up the ear with a butane torch, get it to expand a little bit. Then, since you already have the bolt drilled out, carefully spray inside the bolt with ice cold water to shrink it. The combination of hot ear and cold bolt should get it to crack loose. You'll still need an Easy-out to back out the bolt.

Yes, I soaked it for days with PB Blaster, multiple applications. I'll try the torch and the ice water, thanks!

Better than ice water, and easier to control. Get a can of electronics duster. You know, the stuff we use to blow dust off a computer key board. hold the can upside down and spray that inside the drilled out bolt. It is basically nitrous oxide. Very cold. ;)

I have 3 - 1st generation wings that have been restored and every one of them had the right top engine mount seized.
Why only the right top.....who knows.
So I drill out the bolt then run the same size tap through, buy a longer bolt, and secure it with a nut on the back side.
