Dyna plug wires

#1

Post by Beetleman »

I'm installing new dyna ignition, dyna 3 ohm coils and dyna plug wires.
My question is with the plug wires. I'm using the crimp on end piece that goes into the coil pack. When I strip them back the 3/8 of an inch am I leaving the inner black lining or am I stripping it down to the carbon infused inner fibers. I saw a guy on YouTube crimp onto the black liner, this is also how MSD does it on their videos. I thought I read some where that the black liner is the conductor but it seems like it's just a rubber liner that protects the inner conductor.
Another question is if I should keep the straight spark plug boots that came with the dyna set or use the goldwing screw in 90 degree boots. Can I still use the screw in boots on the carbon plug wires? I realize that I need to remove the resistor in the stock plug ends but I kind of like the look of the straight dyna boots. They look like they should seal around the plug fine but will I still have problems if they get wet?

The object of crimping a new connector on is to make sure the innermost conductor, in your case carbon threads, touches the metal connector. The reason you see them crimp onto that inner rubber liner is for mechanical strength of the connection. Look closely at the video again. Make note of how the center conductor actually contacts the metal cap/connector.

Use the straight plug caps that came with the wire kit. They will seal fine. That resistor inside the stock caps is actually very hard to remove and get a good connection bypassing the resistor. Not hard to take the resistor out. In my opinion it's hard to find something that will take the place of the resistor inside the cap.

you strip 3/8 back to the bare wire, fold the wire over the insulated black wire and crimp the end on.

It might have been a rare event, but I tried the dyna filament/fiber wires and dyna ignition on a 78 once. Could not get it to fire right. Went through it multiple times, had the dyna tested by dyna. Finally in a last ditch attempt swapped them out for copper core wires....fired right up. Your result may be different....just in case it isn't - copper core.

I talked to Larry at dynatek and he said the same thing about crimping onto the black core liner. He also said not to Nick the black core liner because it will cause the carbon fibers to fail prematurely.

Thanks agian!

now, maybe I'm not following your train of thought on this but I had no problem with carefully cutting brass (I think) screws down to the exact length (within .5 mm) of the resistors. just have to get the best diameter... if I 'member correctly this was based on something Randakk had years ago posted on his 'site (but may have been removed. pls don't cry to him about this. he's far above me on skill and knowledge so I could totally be misremembering). then carefully unscrewing the brass slotted inserts inside the boots that fit over the plug heads. removing the resistors (leaving the springs) and installing the cut brass screws (sans heads). baby runs like the proverbial "chased" ape. and I mean pulls HARD @ highway speed.

other drivers on the road prolly don't like the EMF bleeding into their phone or stereo but I'm hardly around long enough for them to stay mad for long.

Glad you had good luck with the brass screws. I didn't.

If he had put the rubber caps onto the wire first, then trim and crimp, they would have gone together easier.
