Naked lady got a little wider in the hips...

The BIKE..... :P
So in the interest of being able to carry more than an extra pair of gloves, I managed to find a set of 81 Interstate saddlebags in Cosmic Black, complete with the monkey bars, on ebay last fall. Spent the winter polishing, getting the locks to work, and fabbing top-mount brackets, here's the result:

I didn't want a trunk, and also wanted to retain the Standard passenger grab rail. As many of you know, the Interstate bags were intended to bolt to tabs hanging off the trunk mount/rack that came instead of the grab handle on the Interstates. This required making up some sort of bracket to keep the bags from flopping around. I did that using some 1/8" x 1" steel strap from Menards, bent to shape. Another tab welded onto that has a hole in it for the bolt that goes thru the grab rail, rear frame tab, and into the fender. I needed to go to a 90mm long bolt to get through everything, and the upright stanchions on the monkey bars had to be modified a bit (narrowed), but I am very happy with the result. :-D
I also added heated grips over winter, and all I can say about those is WOW!! Shoulda gotten them 3 years ago when I first did the bike. Strongly recommend those for anybody living where it gets below 55...

Here's a couple of pics of the bracket. The towel is not bright pink -- it's actually dark red... I gotta get a new phone with a better camera... Anyway,

Image

Image

The bracket is bent to follow the shape of the bags -- this is for the right-side bag here. The vertical tab I bent to about a 3/8" offset -- basically eyeballed it to where the bags looked right and weren't leaning in or out. I'm not a great welder (or painter! :IDTS: ), but it won't fall apart and it's pretty much invisible tucked in there between the bags and the seat. Function over form here...
Any modifications that were necessary were made to the Interstate parts, so if I ever want to go back to factory stock I can in about an hour's work. I even swapped out the Standard tail light bracket for an Interstate part to avoid modifying that.

I like how you got them to hug the bike- no extra space like some mounts.
Goldwings don't accelerate, they gain inertia.

That looks real nice! I had found some Hondaline bags that were NOS sitting on a shelf for 35 years that were Cosmos Black Metallic with the original pin striping that was correct for my '82. Later, I found a Interstate trunk that was also OEM Cosmo Black and that also had the correct pin striping. Installed them all. Now I need to repaint the rest of the bike to match! I already have all of the reproduction decals and all NOS emblems. Just need to paint.

Rat,
The heated grips I got from Aerostich -- they're the Arctic Grip Heater for $57. They have a 3-position switch (lo-off-hi). At 55 degrees ambient temps yesterday my hands were very toasty with the switch on lo and a pair of unlined elkskin gloves. Would have had cold fingers without heat. When I installed them, I measured inside-the-bar temperature at 116° on high, which should keep my hands warm down into the 30s. I made a few changes to the included wiring because I didn't like the cheesy quick-taps they included. Wired it to the ACC open position on the fuse panel with a 5A fuse. I mounted the switch off the choke lever bracket. I'll get a pic tonight or tomorrow and put it in a new thread.

Gerry,
Nice lookin bike. I can never remember if it's Cosmic or Cosmos..... Funky greenish-bluish black..... My bags are not perfect, and neither is the rest of the bike. She photographs well, and is a fantastic 20-footer. Part of me wishes it was as-new perfect, but then I would obsess over any tiny scratch or rock chip. As it is, I don't worry so much -- just try to preserve it as-is :)
