Air filter hose

What do you guys use if you replace the two hoses from the air filter box? Items 9 & 21 below.

My right hose, which is a clear hose, runs down the back of the engine, and is open ended. It's just a drain.

The left hose goes to the top of the engine but is a different material, but guess a clear tube would be ok. I'm not sure what purpose it serves, sure someone will advise.

From the GoldwingDocs site:

The crankcase has a vent hose that allows crankcase blow-by (combustion fumes that blow past the piston rings and into the crankcase) to be taken out of the crankcase and put back into the air filter area, so that they can be sucked back through the throttles and burned again. This is the lower hose in the diagram below. However, the blow-by fumes, as a by-product of combustion, contains water. As these fumes cool off entering the air cleaner, some of that water can condense out. This water drains through the upper hose in the picture into the storage tank (which should be emptied periodically!).

Take note of the last comment in that thread... your clear open ended hose (which should be connected to a dead-end puke canister) is sucking air and other what-not directly into your plenum without being filtered. That's why it's a dead-end. You could just put a cork in it like it's done on the 1500.

As far as replacing your crankcase hose, I'd go with something that could take some heat.

Thanks for that Steve, The puke tank was missing when I got the bike, along with a lot of other bits, and hard to find, some on flea bay in the states but the postage is ridiculous, think I'll try to find a stopper. That's what my other bike has and you take it out to drain once in a while.

different years are setup differently. The early (75-77) had a collection canister the 78 did not and the second hose was just a open drain. The 79 I believe did have one. I do not know about the 1100's.

The 1980 GL1100 parts list does show having a canister so maybe try and get one or if a problem finding one then cap the end and let any fluid out periodically.

Or save yourself some trouble and buy a short length of heater hose and an automotive push-in style valve cover breather and attach it to the engine, and just plug the holes in the air cleaner box...

I was thinking of replacing the collection canister with a PCV valve. Is it worth doing?

i'd worry about the amount of vacuum needed to keep that valve closed in whatever orientation it ended up in.

I like to keep things as Honda intended as best I can.
I have found a supplier in the UK for 12mm I/D clear hose. My plan is to use some to have a new right hose with a bung in the end. I'll have to keep an eye on it and drain as required.
The existing hose that goes into the engine, item 9, is split at the ends but like rocking horse poo to find. My plan is to cut the ends off and reconnect to the engine and then connect a short piece of new clear hose to the short hose off the air box. My opinion is that there's little pressure or fluid so should be ok. I'll post some pics of the finished result when all the bits arrive.

For the engine crankcase hose, just use a longer section of clear tubing (#12) to make up for your shortened section of heat resistant tube (#9). Sounds like you have a plan.
