Question for GL1000 Owners with Windjammer Fairings
Here's the question:
If you have a Vetter Windjammer fairing installed on your GL1000 Gold Wing, can you open the fake gas tank side covers far enough to be able to do service/maintenance work inside?
I've seen some pictures of Windjammers installed on GL1000s and it looks like they would interfere with opening the side covers.
Those of you with Windjammers, let me know.

Back in the day we'd cut the hinge in half and just use the rear sections to slide the panels back to access.

Yes it does interfere as designed. Vetter's workaround is in the installation manual. http://www.craigvetter.com/images/Vette ... GL1000.pdfWingMan71 wrote:...it looks like they would interfere with opening the side covers

Thanks very much for the answer and the link to Vetter's install manual!roncar wrote:Yes it does interfere as designed. If I read it right, every time you need to access the tank side covers you will have to remove the hinges and pull the side covers up and out toward the back of the bike. Kind of a pain, but at least you can get in there to perform maintenance without removing the whole fairing!
That's the beauty of forums such as this... you are usually not the first one to come up against something, and those who were will gladly share their knowledge (and pain) regarding the issue!

if it had a vetter fairing, you took them out so you could access the sides. that is what I did 31 years ago

Yea on my Fulmer setup I leave the hinge pins out. Just used the screw knobs and they hold the side panels just fine.

Ah... I hadn't thought of that solution.Whiskerfish wrote:Yea on my Fulmer setup I leave the hinge pins out. Just used the screw knobs and they hold the side panels just fine.
Maybe just leave the rear hinge pin in for extra security? Looks to be easy to get the rear one out when necessary.

Re: Question for GL1000 Owners with Windjammer Fairings
No need to leave either pin in. It would make it very difficult to get the pin back out. You can leave the hinges on, they are not in the way. Will have to remove the cables. The knob holds the cover on very well. There were probably thousands of GL's back in the day running cross country with just that knob with no issues.

"Knobs Only" was how I bought my black '77. Heck, it took me a while to figure out they were even supposed to hinge on the first place!
