You've confirmed you have probably one float valve sticking open. That was done when you turned the petcock off and it started running better. You could probably fix it with just a cleaning. No need for a new one. Many times doing what you did will remove the offending piece of crud that is causing the issue. Empty float bowl, then sudden rush of gas, washes the crud away.

If it runs good otherwise I'm not even sure I'd put new kits in it. Other than you would already have the rack off. And the rubber is all 39 years old. :roll: ;)

Try tapping on the float bowl with a screwdriver handle to shake it loose.

Check for wet fouled plug. My 1200 used to let a little fuel by the float on #2 if I let it sit for a few weeks. I'd start it up and hear that it was running on 3 then after a minute it would clear. Sometimes it didn't so I'd pull the plug and dry it off with compressed air. Other than that it never showed any signs of flooding and it was so intermittent I didn't mess with it.
