eBay master cylinder rebuild kits

#1

Post by propav8r »

Has anyone used the ubiquitous eBay master cylinder rebuild kits? Is the fit and quality decent, or should I be looking elsewhere?

Not sure what brand of kit you are referencing here. I have used the K&L aftermarket rebuild kits a number of times on various different bikes and had no problem with the quality. I believe they are a Japanese branded manufacturer.
Current Bikes:

1966 CL77 - Honda 305cc - Dual purpose - "Gentleman's Scrambler" was a period moniker.
1967 CL175K0 - Low production number with #802 engine serial- winter 2019/2020 full restoration.
1972 CB350F - Baby Four with low mileage - Cosmetic refresh to the next level 2021/2022.
1978 CB550K - Very original bike with only 7499 Km. from new - light cleanup and refresh done.
1983 CB1100F - Canadian model - DOHC Supersport in pristine low kilometre condition from new.
1984 GL1200 - Standard model in showroom condition - two owner bike from new.
1984 CX650E - Restored summer 2017 - a rare Eurosport model - excellent one owner bike.

Good to know. I sometimes forget that "eBay" isn't a brand...I just subconsciously lump everything on ebay under the same quality level.

I quit rebuilding brake MC when I found this guy on eBay. I get a new MC, brake lever and pivot bolt, hardware, banjo bolt, crush washers and usually a spare rebuild kit for less than $30. Have bought at least 3 of them, for various bikes, and could not be happier. They are not for the purist look for OEM but if you want an MC that works without rebuilding? I highly recommend them.

Yes sir that is the exact seller. Price is always around $30 and note that one comes with a spare "Piston kit". The only thing to watch for is the output of the brake line. Does it look like your existing brake line will work? Some of the MC have the banjo bolt fitting coming out the front and some out the side.

Oh I forgot in the previous post they also come with a new brake light switch installed if the OEM one had it on the MC.

Also, and I've never seen that before, that one looks like it comes with the clutch lever/perch as well! You'd spend almost that much on the two levers alone!

Yes, looks like the outlet is roughly in the same spot. I did have to purchase a replacement clutch lever since mine was all worn out and cracked. I'll go ahead and buy this clutch/master combo and see if the cable fits. It should. If not, I'll just roll with the OE on one side and the new master on the other.

My clutch lever has the switches integral with the perch. If you buy the after market clutch lever, you'll need separate switches. I've seen them advertised but not sure I'd trust Chinese switches.

I wound up purchasing the master and clutch setup linked above. They both work perfectly. The clutch perch has an integrated switch which seems to work just fine.

Which link Propa? The specs mention nothing about clutch-side switches on the one I looked at

Yep. I see it but there's no mention of clutch side switches.

I'm telling you, I bought it, it's there, and it works. There's even a little set screw on the bottom so you can slide the switch in and out and set it so that it opens and closes wherever you want.
