hotwire fix....wisdom in hindsight....

#1

Post by AussieGold »

so, Cakey and myself were having a chat about some Goldwing related stuff, when the subject of spare keys came up. he said he was prone to either losing keys or locking them in the top shelter. i have also done both.... :IDTS:
my solution was to make a "hotwire plug". i tied it behind the right hand sidecover with a piece of wire. it was Old Fogey and
Cyborgs recent dilemma that , i have to admit, made me feel a little smug. :-D that adventure can be found here.....

here is the plug i made up...dont leave home without it action1

it is a very simple plug to make. there are only two wires involved with supplying power to the bike. the RED wire carries power to the switch from the battery.the BLACK wire carries power from the switch to the bikes system. cross the two and you have ignition.
to do that , remove the plug from the rear of the ignition switch and pull the plug clear, plug the hotwire plug in and it will get you home. Image[/url

and if you've locked the keys in the top shelter or need to pop it to fuel it up ? see here :orange

Yes, a piece of wire will do. And the funny thing is, not one person who has seen that plug , has known what it is for. The plug just makes it easy. :-D

And you can open the tank lid..from the back with the seat off..and a length of stiff wire. If you open the lid and engage the lock mechanism..you can figure out what needs to be pulled and then youi can have an idea of how to do it with a wire with the lid shut..practice makes perfect.

Just to add, if you want a tail light you need to add another wire. Could be important especially after dark.

This is a fix for a FAILED ignition switch. Just intended to get you home.
Ps
Reckon OLD FOGEY could have used it recently as well. Admittedly an unusual situation, but ............

Thanks for the post.

A week ago when my ignition switch started to go this would have saved me. I did have an extra key, but that wouldn't have helped with the no power situation. Luckily I was close to home and it didn't happen a few days later when I was 1200 miles away.

Then after you make it home with the hotwired ignition switch, remove it and do these two things (mine is now perfect after doing so , no need to waste money on a new one).

Could also be used at home as a troubleshooting aid (eliminate the switch as a problem.) I'd still add the tail light wire for on the road use. A switch could fail at night just as easily as broad daylight.

And the connections indicated are for 75-77. Later switches have a different pin out.

This is the trick a guy used to steal my bike. Luckily, he didn't take it to far away and it was found a couple of days later, intact.

When was that?? Maybe we can blame Aussiegold.
