Martek Electronic ignition system

#1

Post by mhelzer »

I have a 79 Goldwing that I am trying to put back together to start. There is an electronic ignition system, Martek out of Sanata Anna CA, on the bkik. There are four wires that need to be hooked up. Yellow, Red, Black, and Green. Any ideas on where these wires hook up?

Looking at mine right now hope to help you out this. The one I have was taken off and I bought it, it came to me marked this way by the person I purchased it from here on the board. Yes someone was thinking! thanks.

red to the yellow wire on the bike
yellow to the blue wire on the bike
white to the ground -
black to the bat + (I would use a keyed on hot wire as to have it on only
when the bike is keyed and ready to run.)
this is how the one I have is marked
there is one other 4 prong plug witch plugs in to the pick-up unit of the system.

welcome mhelzer. another transplanted Okie here, too. good luck with the Martek, I had one in a spare engine and couldn't figure it out, but I had missing parts.

thanks for that info Frank-N-Wing! if I can ever get a brain that'll help. yes, I said it. I meant just exactly that, "...if I ONLY had a brain."

I had a Martek system in the my 77 GL when I first got it. The engine would hardly run and I discovered why when I opened the points cover and discovered that there where no points, just this red plate with a black plastic ring with wires comming out of it! The problem was that the bolt that held the ‘rotor’ to the camshaft had backed out about an 1/8th of an inch and the rotor had come off the advancer lugs. Once I got it back in place, the engine ran again. I have replaced the Martek system with a complete Dyna system including the 3 ohm coils and wires. This setup does not require a resistor. With the Randakk carb rebuild, and the Dyna system on the bike I would never even think of putting the Martek back on for any reason.

I shot some pictures of the setup I think and still have the system. Maybe I can figure out how it all went together before I removed it. I'll look it over and see what I can sort out.

Martek Products Inc. GL1000 ignition connections

#7

Post by dryoung »

Here is how my old Martek ignition was hooked up. The ‘black box’ has two sets of wires attached. Both sets are yellow, red, black and green. One set of wires goes to the red plate with the black sensor ring attached to it. This red plate mounts where the points used to be.

The second sets of wires connect as follows. The black wire connects to a switched 12volt supply (white with green strip wire) such as the hot side of the blinker relay. The green connects to ground, in my case it was connected directly to the negative post of the battery. The yellow wire connects (with a bullet connector) to the ‘splitter’ where the original yellow wire from the points connected. The red wire connects (with a bullet connector) to the ‘splitter’ where the original blue wire from the points connected. The condenser was also connected as it was with the points. Also the OEM ballast resistor was in place.

The bike ran ok with this setup but I could never get both the 1-2 and 3-4 coils timed because the sensors had to move together which didn’t allow split timing.

This help?
