Just got off the phone with a local rad shop...
He would have to see the rad for a firm quote but said they did one not long ago for another bike and it was expensive..
He said it "could cost $400 to $500!" :shock:
I bought the bike and a bunch of spare parts for $500...
If it "could" cost $400..it's "going to" cost me at least $300..
edited to add.. I pulled the trigger on the e-bay aluminum one...if anyone is interested in pics or feedback on fit and finish let me know.

77 WING, 1200 engine with 77 heads, cams, gl1100 foot pegs, Magna V65 front end, 764A carbs, [-gone Suzuki M109 monoshock--, replaced with gl1100 shocks] gl 1200 swing arm, gl1500 final drive, wheel and rear brakes Valkyrie seat, Meanstreak tank, Sportster pipes, Power Arc ignition off crank.

No and I didn't ask..from conversations here and other research I've done..that seems to be the going price.
I don't know if the price of brass went up but that is the only thing I can think of. I can't see labour being more expensive on that rad compared to a car radiator..

that's all it is..a smaller version of a car rad..
the one on the bike doesn't leak..or least it didn't when the previous owner started the bike for me but....
I'm rebuilding the cooling system complete with a new OEM water pump and I've learned the $$$ way..if you're going to do it..do it right the first time..
plus you should see the boogered soldering job someone did on the rad. I'll get a pic of it tomorrow... :shock:

Had a new core put in the rad for my '85 LTD - $364.00 taxes in. One of the reasons for the cost is the rad on a 1200 is smaller than the 1000/1100 and is supposed to be a high efficiency, just capable of keeping the bike cool at cruising speeds. I also live on an island and it had to be brought over from Vancouver, BC. Nothing inexpensive about living on Vancouver Island.

The older gent who did the core replacement flow tested the rad when I took it in and he estimated about 30% flow reduction, and then recommended a new core. He was also familiar with the GW rads and had the core catalogue open to the page for GW rads because he had just done one the week before.

These pictures are of the top and bottom passages. Considerable build up of scale over 32 years. When I viewed the passages with a light, there was considerable reduction inside the tubes and some were blocked.

Good reason to put in a new core or entire rad. A fellow I correspond with asked about when to change the rad fluid. I mentioned that it is not the antifreeze itself that wears out, but more specifically it's the additives that protect the engine are done. The same with oil, the additives deplete over time and use. Can't do anything about leaking tubes/passages.

Good thing most of us do not keep records of what we spend. Unfortunately I have for my '85 LTD, not for the faint of heart.
