DARKSIDE ON A NGW...ANYONE?

#1

Post by Paxton Gomez »

Hello Fellow Wing Nuts! :)

Many folks express outrage that anyone would even think about putting a Car Tire on a Motorcycle. confused22
I know this as am reminded every time I park my Valkyrie anywhere.
I mean, some folks get real emotional about this... :horse: and I understand it; people have preferences. vikings
To all I say, have it your way... (or not). giveup

I am not posting to critique, neither to sell this idea. I am simply asking, has anyone installed a Car tire in place of the M/C tire on a 1975 - 84 Gold Wing?
If so, I'd like to know... what car-tire size are you running? Any pictures?

Thanks. hippie1 :dragbike

Seems like it would handle very poorly? How would you lean it over in a turn? And if you did, seems like you'd be riding on the edge and have very little traction?

What's the draw here? Save a couple of bucks? Better highway stability?

A friend of mine has been using a car tire on his valkrie for years, says it handles a bit different but no problem. I have followed close behind him watching how it leans, seems ok. Big difference is about 3 times the mileage. However, it is important to choose the right tire...something of racing quality with softer rubber.

Well, if you really want to know...

Don't know about pre-1200's, but it can be done on 1200's with EXTREME caution (and a bit of luck, and more knowledge than I have).

On my 1200 hack I wanted to fit a car tire. I get less than 5000 miles on a rear E3. I talked to (forget his name) the tech at Motorvation sidecars. He has fit a VW tire onto his 84 1200, no problem. I was there (his shop in Iowa) a couple weeks ago on a trip to Minny Soda and saw it myself.

About 6 months ago (after I first talked to him about this) I tried fitting one to my 1200 rear rim. Went with a Vredstein 155R15, an equal to the VW tire size.
Image

NOTE: With a bit of searching, you will find many warnings about putting a car tire on a 1200. The bead area is slightly greater in diameter than a car wheel of equal size; I read somewhere that years ago (when GL1200s were actually in vogue...) that a machinist gentleman actually had a jig built to take several thousandths off the bead, while the wheel was ON the bike and using the engine as a motive source. He did this at Goldwing rallys; or so I read...

So I bought the tire, and took it to a local shop. I warned him that this may/should work, but we needed to be real careful, as some had to use extreme pressure in order to seat the bead. He said "no problem" and said he would be real careful. I was watching/helping him mount it, and he got interrupted several times. So when he went off talking on the phone I went next door to a machinist shop as I had business there. Shortly thereafter, we heard a POP/BLAM, and the building slightly shook. Then a whole bunch of cursing.

Went next door, and the tire guy was holding his very red/swollen hand up in agony, bouncing around and cursing up a storm. The tire looked like this:
Image

We got him loaded up on advil to combat the swelling, and cleaned the cut. He was a big muscular guy, and was very very lucky. Nothing broken, but badly bruiosed and swollen.

So. Yes, it can and has been done; but I will never try it again on a 1200 stock rear rim.

However...
A gl1500 rear rim and pumpkin will fit on the 1200. dancr
It is 16", and several 1500s have used a Vredstein 16" car tire on that rim with no problems. While the 1200 swingarm will fit the 1500 wheel and a bike tire (I am using an Avon Venom), unfortunately, the 1200 swingarm is NOT wide enough to accommodate the squared off car tire on the 1500 rim. I've tried. What needs to happen is that a 1500 swingarm needs to be adapted to the 1200 frame. It will fit, and I have my mockup done. But you need a good welder and ALSO have to relocate the port side muffler bracket, as it interferes with the swingarm.

As soon as my hack tire wears out, this is the way I'm gonna go.

YMMV, but be really careful if you pursue the CT on the stock 1200 rim. I remember that a truck tire (granted, our rims ara little smaller) has the potential energy to throw bowling ball half a mile. So maybe the 1200 tire could only throw it 1/4 mile... :eyes

Datsunfreak; As I said, people have preferences... :pepsi Some like Pepsi, some like Coke. :-?

Pago cruiser; Wow, that is a scary picture of a tire.
I am not a Vulcanic expert however, it appears as if the tire had been seating around for a while before selling and weakened over time. Whatever.
I really appreciate your taking time to post the story and showing the photos. action1

BTW, as I mentioned in my original post, I run a car tire on my Valkyrie. Yes there are some differences, especially turning right at a slow speed...
One must "relearn" how to deal with the handling differences until they become second nature. crossy.gif

I know some folks who have done the swap and did not like it. So they went back to the M/C tire. As I mentioned, people do have preferences...
Others, like me, find the C/T desirable for a number of reasons... My Dragon weighs 795 lbs. The car tire carries the weight and runs through the twisties with great aplomb.

As datsunfreak mentioned, some people do the swap because the tire lasts longer and a C/T is less expensive. True, I paid $89 for my tire (205/65/16) delivered to the shop.

While saving money is good, if the C/T performance was not reassuring , I would not risk keeping the tire even for the savings...
Indeed, saving money is not always a sound rationale for doing things. :eyes

Again, thank you all.

Huh? It's Sunday morning, and maybe I'm slow...

"I am not a Vulcanic expert however, it appears as if the tire had been seating around for a while before selling and weakened over time. Whatever."
Nope. The tire was purchased from a dealers current stock. I know I said 6 months ago, but as this is August already, it had to me more than 6 months. I know it was last year, so it was somewhere fall of 2010. The tire has been sitting out in the AZ sun since the incident. Here's a pic of the "born on date", the 13th week of 2010. The tire was flawless and supple when we attempted installation.

I spent quite a bit of time doing research and trying to get current info on car tires on GL1200. And learned first hand (well, it was someone elses hand...) that it is not as simple as it sounds on the 1200. But eventually I am going to do this on the 1200 hack. I'd be further along than I am, but my first welder butt-welded the tubes (1500 to 1200) without a reinforcing sleeve. Good welding, but a poorly engineered weld. So now I gotta do it again... At any rate, glad to share the info. anim-cheers1

On this forum, tire and oil threads kill kttens and puppies. Therefore, it seems reasonable to assume that a darkside thread will kill baby zebras.

As much as I would love to offer up an opinion or counsel, I forbear.

No can do on an 1100. Too narrow, no swing arm clearance.
